Free Synagogue of Flushing
FAQ’s
How often do you have services?
We have weekly Shabbat services on Fridays at 7:15pm and Torah Service/Torah Study/Luncheon is at 10:30 am once a month – check website for dates. We also have several special events and services throughout the year.
Can anyone attend services?
Yes. Anyone can attend services, but to become a member, one or more persons in a family unit must be of the Jewish faith. Membership information is available HERE.
You’re called the Free Synagogue, so is everything free?
We do offer free admission to our High Holy Day services, provided that an RSVP has been made in advance. Dues and tuition, however, are necessary to help support our historic sanctuary and exciting programming throughout the year.
We are called the Free Synagogue because we were founded on the philosophy of the first Free Synagogue, the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue in Manhattan. These principles include freedom of the pulpit, freedom in religious philosophy, freedom in terms of seating, and the equality of men and women in participation and leadership. But the most important aspect of the Free Synagogue movement founded by Rabbi Stephen S. Wise is the principal of Social Justice, which we have always pursued. The Free Synagogue has been a bastion of liberal thought and social activism.
That said, our members do have access to special programming that is not open to the public, as well as many events that are free for our members.
What do I get for my membership dues?
Membership has many benefits. In addition to weekly services, members have free access to many enriching programs and events throughout the year, including special services, adult education courses, weekly meditation, holiday parties, special events like our Purim carnival, and many of our guest speakers and musical events. Members also enjoy the privilege of use of our social hall for their special life events, such as Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, baby namings, and weddings.
Our family is interfaith. Can our children attend Hebrew school and religious education?
Yes. The Free Synagogue of Flushing welcomes interfaith families, and children can attend our religious education program if one parent or guardian is Jewish. Membership is required for enrollment in the education program, but the first year of dues is half-price if there are children enrolled in our school.
What is your policy on LGBTQ+ membership?
We welcome everyone! We do not discriminate against anyone’s sexual orientation or gender identity. If one member of the household is Jewish, then the household can join.
What if I can’t afford membership dues?
